Activity Theme: 2025 Fall Shimane University Mandarin Study Abroad  Program in University of Taipei

Activity Time: 2025.09.15-2025.09.26

Activity Introduction:

A delegation of faculty and students from Shimane University, Japan, recently participated in a two-week Mandarin language and cultural study abroad program at the University of Taipei (UT). The program featured a comprehensive Living Mandarin course, delivered in a lively and engaging way that enabled students to quickly apply the language in daily conversations. In addition, participants enjoyed cultural workshops such as traditional seal carving—where they created their own personalized stamps—and a DIY pineapple cake activity, both offering a hands-on appreciation of Taiwan’s cultural heritage.

Beyond classroom learning, the program included visits to many of Taipei’s iconic landmarks, such as the National Palace Museum, the Presidential Office Building, and the historic Dadaocheng district, allowing participants to gain deeper insights into Taiwan’s history and cultural legacy. A special day trip to Yilan—often called “Taipei’s backyard”—was also arranged, during which students experienced the unique hot spring fish therapy, tasted authentic clay-oven chicken, and visited the National Center for Traditional Arts for an in-depth cultural exploration.

Notably, recognizing UT’s reputation as a “Incubator for Gold Medallists,” the UT President Yin-Hao Chiu arranged for the delegation to visit the Tianmu Campus to experience a professional sports training session. Under the guidance of expert coaches, the students were able to engage in athletic training firsthand, leaving them with meaningful experiences and lasting memories.

Culinary experiences were another highlight of the program. The delegation dined at world-renowned Din Tai Fung and the popular hotpot chain “Zhu Jian,” and also explored Shilin Night Market, where they sampled a wide variety of local snacks and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of Taiwan’s night market culture. Whether in language learning, cultural exploration, or food experiences, the students gained invaluable insights and lasting impressions.

Students from Shimane University shared that the program not only enhanced their Mandarin proficiency but also deepened their understanding of Taiwanese culture and society. They expressed sincere gratitude for the warmth and hospitality of UT’s faculty and students, noting that this journey will remain a memorable and cherished part of their academic experience.

UT also extends its heartfelt appreciation to Vice President Prof. Kataoka Yoshimi of Shimane University , who personally accompanied the delegation. Her presence not only demonstrated strong support for the exchange but also further strengthened the bond of friendship and collaboration between the two universities. Looking ahead, both institutions will continue to foster diverse opportunities for academic and cultural cooperation, and eagerly anticipate future reunions to write new chapters of cross-border educational exchange.
